Ulster American, the most recent play by David Ireland, is a gripping and thought-provoking production at Riverside Studios London that addresses questions of identity, power, and cultural theft. Hollywood heavyweights Woody Harrelson and Andy Serkis feature in this two-hander, which is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary theater.

In a rehearsal hall in Belfast, Serkis's character, Tom, and Harrelson's, Cole, are directing the play that Serkis wrote. However, as the rehearsal process goes on, it becomes evident that there are other stakes involved besides the script. This disparity in style sparks a series of intense discussions that go deep into the histories and ideas of the parties involved.

Harrelson's portrayal of Cole is incredibly compelling. He delivers his lines with a fierce, seductive passion that lends the role an unadulterated fire. His unrepentant arrogance and self-assuredness, which are at once repugnant and endearing, give his character a strong presence on stage.

On the other hand, Serkis gives a quiet and muted portrayal of Tom. His quiet power and unwavering belief make him an intriguing counterpoint to Cole's bombast. Their sequences together are riveting, and it's obvious that the two performers are under pressure from one another.

Harland's portrayal of Luisa in the play offers a novel viewpoint on the male-dominated group dynamic. Her admiration for Conway changes to contempt for him, demonstrating her moral courage and capacity for independent thought. Even with the older men's boisterous presence, Luisa's sardonic humor gives the onstage exchanges more nuance and complexity. Even though Harland's portrayal isn't always totally believable, the denouement's climax moment highlights her adaptability and lays the stage for an unforgettable finale that leaves the audience wanting more. The play's Luisa character is a real standout, demonstrating how a female presence can improve the story and present an alternative viewpoint on morals and knowledge.

Ulster American's dialogue pushes limits and gets you thinking about the problems at hand. It's simultaneously intriguing and humorous. The playwright's ability to hilariously address difficult issues is wonderful and thought-provoking— which is reminiscent of the musical "The Book of Mormon.”

The drama delves deeply into identity and cultural appropriation as it follows two people as they struggle with their connection to their ancestral spirits. It is possible to see Cole's overt entitlement of Tom's play as a metaphor for how non-Western cultures have traditionally been taken advantage of and exploited by Western culture. This theme has been a recurring issue throughout history, as Western countries have often sought to dominate and benefit from the resources and cultures of other societies.

The show does an incredible job of balancing lighthearted and serious topics. It allows the audience to laugh at these subjects and acknowledge how absurd it is that they are spoken in such a casual manner. The tension between the characters' discomfort and the gravity of the subject matter creates an unsettling yet captivating environment. The play skillfully addresses challenging issues in a way that is entertaining and thought-provoking.
