For the most recent Eid celebration, I visited Loraine Estate Community Centre to learn about the holiday and how it is observed. There was a huge selection of sweet treats that were allowed to be eaten throughout the event.
Moreover, we were also able to participate in an interactive cooking lesson led by Tas, a Diaspo teacher. We learned how to make authentic Asian dishes as well as the tales behind them. As such, in this step-by-step lesson with plenty of food to take home, we learned secret family recipes that have been passed down through generations.
Diaspo's purpose is to assist home chefs in sharing their culture via cuisine. Every recipe has meaning for them. It's about their tales and secrets, and not just the few steps that recipes online provide. They're recipes that been handed down through the years from generation to generation. Needless to say, the foods prepared were exquisitely tasty.
For additional information, Diaspo hosts live culinary workshops conducted by senior citizens. For these cooks, it's an opportunity to better their health while doing something they enjoy: passing on recipes and practices passed down through their family. These older adult cooks may work from home and choose their own hours, allowing them to make money on their own terms.
Creole, Caribbean, Indian, Moroccan, Libyan, Pakistani, and other classes are available. Each session is small and hands-on, allowing students to form significant bonds with the instructors while learning the techniques, tales, and secrets behind these traditional dishes.
