This is no ordinary foraging trip, as it is organized by Totally Wild UK which only runs this course twice a year. The location and details of the event are strictly confidential, as per the organizer's request.

Trained dogs greeted the guests upon arrival. These specially bred and trained furry friends sniff out and locate truffles in the wild, showcasing their incredible sense of smell.

All of these mushrooms come together in this beautiful basket, each with its unique flavors and textures.

The guides lead the way to the forest, teaching about the different types of truffles, how to identify them, and the ideal conditions for their growth.

Finding these elusive riches is not an easy task. Truffles require the proper sort of soil and favor certain tree partners, such as birch, oak, hazel, holly, and hornbeam. Understanding the underlying bedrock is important since truffles prefer calcareous soils. Fortunately, a wide strip of calcareous rock crosses many areas of England and Wales. The secret is to explore these areas and look for any indications of truffle activity. It's important to keep in mind that truffles grow underground, making them notoriously hard to find, but if you know where to look, you could be lucky enough to find some.

Summer truffle

These versatile mushrooms can be sautéed, grilled, or roasted to bring out their unique flavors and textures.

The summer truffle has a very alluring smell, like woodland mushrooms. Its scents are highly volatile and fleeting, but on the palate, they are reminiscent of gently buttered hazelnut. Hence, it is best to consume the summer truffle uncooked, just grated over a little salad of heated potatoes.

The highlight of the day is undoubtedly the discovery of truffles. These elusive fungi grow below the surface, and their fragrance is a telltale sign of their presence. The hunters’ keen noses show us to several truffle-bearing trees, which lead to harvesting a small but valuable haul.

Back at the base, a delicious lunch is indulged featuring mushroom pate made with wood blewit. The pate is rich and earthy, with a subtle truffle flavor that will leave you wanting more. There is also an enjoyable hearty apple-spiced woodland crumble, made with wild apples and berries foraged earlier in the season.

Truffles have an earthy, umami flavor that is unsurpassed in the culinary arts, and they can elevate even the most basic pasta recipes to the level of gourmet masterpieces. It's important to utilize fresh truffles sparingly while working with them because larger quantities of their strength can be overwhelming. By shredding or thinly slicing them, then adding them to your pasta meals right before the conclusion of cooking, will let the flavor of the truffle come through in the meal without taking over. The classic pasta dishes are elevated to new levels of elegance and flavor by the depth of flavor and complexity of the truffle.

The pasta that is served during this hunt has a rich, earthy flavor that is tinged with sweetness. It smells musky, with undertones of nutty and garlicky notes. It has a strong, nuanced flavor that makes it seem like a valued component of fine dining. Truffle mushrooms are a real culinary gem because of their flavor, which gourmands and foodies alike like.
