February 3, 2025

Duck Pond by Circa is an imaginative and boundary-pushing reimagining of Swan Lake and The Ugly Duckling, blending circus arts, physical theater, and contemporary dance into a dazzling, multi-sensory experience. This avant-garde production has been performed internationally, including in London at the Royal Festival Hall. It combines humor, acrobatics, and poignant storytelling, delivering a tale that examines themes of identity, transformation, and self-discovery.

The stage is a masterpiece of minimalist versatility, bordered by curtains and enhanced by vibrant lighting designed by Alexander Berlage. From shimmering sequins and intricate feather costumes to striking aerial silks, the production is a visual feast. Costumes by Libby McDonnell and wing-maker Alice de Groot elevate the aesthetic, with humorous nods like flipper-wearing ducks that lend a cheeky charm. The eclectic soundscape by Jethro Woodward merges Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake motifs with electro-beats, creating an auditory journey that complements the surreal visuals.

A cast of world-class acrobats brings this production to life, delivering jaw-dropping stunts and graceful choreography. Sophie Seccombe as the “Ugly Duckling” transforms into a graceful swan with mesmerizing precision, while Kimberley Rossi’s performance as the Black Swan aerialist is both daring and elegant. The ensemble shines in synchronized routines, particularly the aerial silks act, which sees three performers executing gravity-defying feats with seamless coordination. Asha Colless as the Fairy Swan Mother adds depth and emotional resonance to the narrative.

The production also includes moments of whimsy and absurdity, like a duck army disrupting traditional ballet scenes, injecting humor into the drama. However, the balance between the surreal and the story occasionally falters. A late-stage sequence involving multimedia projections and stage deconstruction, though visually bold, detracts slightly from the narrative flow, leaving the final moments somewhat fragmented.

Duck Pond transcends its circus roots to explore profound themes. By fusing elements of The Ugly Duckling with Swan Lake, it creates a narrative about acceptance, transformation, and finding one’s place in a chaotic world. The playful yet sophisticated tone makes it accessible for both younger audiences and adults, though some sequences with semi-erotic undertones may feel out of place for a family audience.

Circa’s Duck Pond is a bold and captivating production that redefines how classic tales can be retold through contemporary performance art. Its mix of humor, technical brilliance, and emotional storytelling ensures it will remain a standout piece in Circa's repertoire. While it might benefit from tighter narrative cohesion, the visual and physical artistry is unparalleled, making it a must-see for fans of innovative theater and circus.
