London Craft Week: The Sustainable Future of Fabrics

May 25, 2022
Exhibition

Dodds & Shute and Yarn Collective teamed up to help promote awareness of sustainable innovation, inspiration, and products in the design industry, with a focus on textiles.

Yarn Collective makes natural and recycled textiles while still providing high-quality fabrics. Albee, Molly, and Jack, three recycled textile collections on show during the week, are elegantly woven with recycled cotton from the fashion industry.

Cotton that would have otherwise gone to waste is used in the making of cloth. On average, each person in the United Kingdom produces 1.7kg of fashion waste every year that ends up in landfills. Yarn Collective hopes to reduce our collective environmental impact by recycling the said waste.

Mohair and Velvet Fabric

The company strictly ensures never to have a big number of textile collections since it believes that this often leads to waste. Instead, it chooses to keep its numbers small, with timeless textiles such as cottons and velvets that designers can use again and again. The company's goal is for at least 70% of its collections to be manufactured with recycled materials by the end of 2022.

On the other hand, Dodds & Shute is a design-led procurement firm that provides premium interiors with aspirational furniture.

It specializes in offering a customized service to each of its clients, with an emphasis on sustainability, cost planning, and design consulting, and is committed to procuring the most environmentally friendly materials. Dodds & Shute assists designers and end clients in achieving their environmental objectives and delivering more sustainable projects.

The company believes that the design industry can evolve into a transparent and responsible force for change, and it wants to be a part of that transition. That’s why it is proud of partnering with ethical producers such as Yarn Collective to address society's textile waste problem through such initiatives as The Sustainable Future of Fabrics exhibition.

It was very inspirational to see such great products made by visionary designers who are reinventing our relationship with textile waste hoping it will serve as our wake-up call.
