Sarabande Studio: Fashion Takeover at Soho Home

June 7, 2022
Exhibition

Sarabande studios have been in west London since Wednesday 27 April and will be here until Tuesday 21 June, taking over Soho Home's main shop on the King's Road. Paper installation artist Alice von Maltzahn and embroidery artist Aurora Pettinari-York set up shop in honor of London Craft Week. Sarabande studios' walls were mocked up to offer visitors a glimpse inside the foundation's creative home, which is normally closed to the public.

Sarabande is based in a historic Stable Block conversion in Haggerston, where 15 studios house designers and artists from a variety of fields. Sarabande, the heart of East London's vibrant creative scene, embodies all that is creative. The building is home to a diverse group of craftsmen, reflecting a wide range of skills and the diverse group of artisans who collaborate to create impressive collections. Sarabande also hosts filmmakers, animators, photographers, digital designers, and visual artists in addition to these.

Sarabande's support extends beyond current and former designers— once a Sarabande artist, always a Sarabande artist. They have been giving out scholarships to students who want to study at top London schools since 2012. Sarabande's scholarship program is the foundation of its work, supporting the education of tomorrow's most innovative creatives.

For their BOUND Exhibition collaboration with Soho Home, they showcased a limited-edition hardbound book featuring an eclectic collection of paper-based artworks made by 36 Sarabande artists. The one-of-a-kind collection praised the artists' limitless creativity as well as the promise of paper artistry.

In every two weeks since May, a new artistic duo has always taken up residence, showing their work to the public. One of them, Martina Spetlova's kaleidoscopic woven leather, which is normally seen in her apparel, was transformed into furniture and home items, and was complimented by Kirico Ueda's fascinating porcelain chess sets.

Later, Stephen Doherty's beautiful ink flowers and Christopher Thompson-Royd's exquisite golden flowery wall sconces were also on show at The Chelsea Flower Show.

Overall, it was great witnessing the various artists display their unique talents and abilities.
