Joseph Cheaney & Sons, a legacy company with over 130 years of experience handcrafting English footwear, recognizes the value of exceptional leather care. All of the essential processes are shown on how to clean, condition, and polish your footwear in the comfort of their gorgeous shop in Coal Drops Yard.
In 1886, Joseph Cheaney founded the firm, and in 1896, he and his son Arthur moved to the current location of the facility. During the factory's first 80 years of operation, it created shoes solely for some of the world's most prestigious merchants, branded to their specific needs.
The firm's future rested in developing its own Cheaney brand for domestic and overseas markets. In 1964, the family made the choice to sell the firm to Church's English Shoes in order to preserve the family's tradition. The Cheaney brand was then made available to shops all over the world, with the Desborough plant providing a thorough in-stock service.
During this hands-on free session, we discovered how to invest in the longevity of footwear by polishing, nourishing leather, and creating mirror-shine finishes. The interactive class lasted around an hour and included all necessary equipment and materials but attendees had to take a pair of leather shoes for polishing with them.
Cheaney is committed to handcrafting quality leather shoes in order to provide the greatest footwear in one’s own particular, sophisticated style. A pair of Cheaney shoes takes around eight weeks and 200 hand, or hand tooling, operations.
The upper is made up of individual pieces of upper and liner leather that are sewed together. This is a difficult and complex technique that changes depending on the type being created and requires the shoemaker to have excellent hand-eye coordination. At their tutelage, achieving shine didn't require much effort or dexterity.
