To celebrate the London Craft Week 2022, Tengri, pioneers of sustainable luxury, alongside Huntsman, one of the world’s most prestigious bespoke tailors, hosted a fascinating talk about cuts and rare cloth. The talk was presented by Tengri's CEO and founder Nancy Johnston and Huntsman's head cutter and creative director Campbell Carey.
From the talk, we learnt that Tengri has recently started producing a luxurious, high quality and rare textile woven from Khangai Noble Yarns®. The material, known for its outstanding characteristics, is obtained from the Khangai yak, an ancient beast that dates back 10,000 years, that is found in Mongolia's steppes.
Just like the Khangai material, all of Tengri's textiles are made from rare natural fibres gathered responsibly from the most distant corners of the globe through their ethical and transparent supply chain.
As such, Tengri's style has proven to be disruptive in textile business world, earning them quite some reputation and following. Their values allow them to maintain biodiversity by strengthening the linkages between fashion and agriculture. They also acquire natural fibers from farmers and herders directly, giving them fair rates and establishing long-term connections.
Tengri’s development team in the UK uses cutting-edge design and technological innovation to turn these fibers into luxuriously soft textiles. They integrate the principles of circular economy at every stage of their zero-waste value chain. To enhance product performance and to minimise waste, they apply innovative designs, systems and technology to fibres and yarns.
This Tengri project demonstrates how the manufacturing industry may strive for zero waste. The Tengri Innovation Award encourages students, recent graduates, and newly certified tailoring experts to experiment with fabrics in new ways, displaying a modern take on old techniques.
