We are welcomed into the opulent and carefree realm of "Tug" at the Royal Court Theatre as the curtain rises on Rory Mullarkey's Mates in Chelsea. This drama examines the extravagant lifestyles of the London elite, who maintain their power despite their frivolity in a satirical manner. The play is a beautiful and amusing mash-up of humor and wit that will have you in stitches.

A hilarious new comedy exploring the follies of status and riches, Mates in Chelsea is directed by Royal Court Associate Director Sam Pritchard. The show immerses in the lavish world of Laurie Kynaston's Tug and his privileged circle. While predictable, it is an entertaining story that does not take itself too seriously, and it succeeds because of the individuality and physical posturing of each character brought to life by the actor’s portrayal. The central figure of the tale is Theodore "Tug" Bungay, a landed gentleman who resides in West London and spends extravagantly because he believes his family will always be wealthy. Tug's future doesn't appear to be so promising. Due to financial difficulties, his mother, Lady Agrippina, played by Fenella Woolgar, has come up with a decision to sell their land to a Russian tycoon. To prevent this, Tug sets out on an odd expedition with his mates. The actors' mannerisms and dialogue add depth to their characters, making them more than just costumes.

A shallow and entitled figure is brought to life by Laurie Kynaston. There’s a detachment felt for the character’s suffering because of how convincingly he plays the role. Even when the character faces adversity, there is no hint of emotional connection or empathy. While the character suffers, it is understood full well that he has brought his bad luck upon himself. For the remainder of the play, Tug's companions pretend to be the prospective buyer in a number of absurd scenarios intending to either salvage or destroy the castle's future.

Aside from the drama not addressing current concerns about those in wealth and their morality, the play also has predictability as its drawback. The plot twist could be seen a mile away, making it less exciting.

The play makes accurate statements about losing one's social status due to reckless spending habits. It showed that living beyond one's means can lead to financial ruin and social isolation making Mates in Chelsea as an an enjoyable production, especially as a lighthearted one. The play compensates with its captivating characters and humorous dialogues. Overall the concept is audacious and visually beautiful.
