Pollock's Toy Museum is an exciting private collection exhibition hall containing a large collection of toys from all over the world. Mr. Benjamin Pollock, the last of the Victorian toy theatre publishers, inspired the name of the museum.
The museum, laid out across a maze of small rooms, each displaying a themed group of toys, felt like a travel back in time. On admittance, one is given a printed walk through guide of the museum. The guide gives little blurbs as to what the room is about and the main toys to look out for.
The staff showed us around the fascinating collection, jogging so many childhood memories. We also learned about toy theaters, antique magic lanterns, folk toys, the history of board games, teddy bears from around the world, dolls house furniture and so much!
The Museum is stunning both inside and out, and it provided us with numerous photo opportunities. The shop-front is eye-catching in green and red, with jolly hand-painted murals, and the interior is a must-see for eclectic-artsy decor. Each room has a theme, and the whole Museum and shop are full of gems that are familiar and extraordinary.
This is all presented in a non-formal way and seems to have been uncorrupted by nasty fashions. The Museum itself has a very interesting history and the staff are so committed to keeping the place alive.
It's a great place to meet in London because it's only two minutes from the Godge Street tube station. It was a great way of keeping London's rush and bustle aside albeit momentarily. All in all, if you wish to take a tour through the history of dolls, teddies, and board games in the UK, this is the place to go!
