The acclaimed Palomar Group's newest restaurant, The Barbary Next Door, is a great restaurant that offers delectable and heart-warming food and service. Just next door to the older well-known The Barbary, The Barbary Nextdoor is a little all-day restaurant which features North African and Moorish fare. It is influenced by shady Moroccan courtyards and Andalusian bars in dark alleys.
In this little area, you will be elbow to elbow and knee to knee with your neighbours, making the whole experience more delightful. This restaurant radiates genuine warmth, both from the employees and the hearty meals they prepare and serve. You'll likely remain much longer than you intended because of the great ambiance and lively music
The zinc counter, which has lime-washed walls and an old antique mirror as a backdrop, can accommodate about ten individuals. When the weather is warmer, the huge windows in the front of the building are pulled open to display the terrace, which has chairs and tables set about for al fresco meals and beverages.
Their menu is inspired by the smoky flavours and heady spices of North African and Moorish Spanish cuisine. The Barbary's head chef, Daniel Alt, oversees the cuisine, while Honey Spencer, the restaurant's wine director and sommelier, selects wines from Spain, France, and Morocco. To pass the time, you can also order extra drinks such as White Port Martinis, Alhambra Canas, and Cafes Cortados.
From their breakfast menu, I placed my order. We were given a wonderful slice of pumpkin bread from Ras El Hanout along with some clotted cream. The serving of spiced double cream with the thick, delicious pumpkin bread set it apart from other baked goods. Additionally, we had the baked egg, chilli chata, and berries with tahini, Greek yoghurt, and date molasses, all of which were delicious! It was a memorable and enjoyable mealtime. Excellent in every way: the food, setting, and service.
The Barbary Next Door has many of the same traits as The Barbary – similar flavours and inspirations, a wine list devised by Honey Spencer and a relaxed atmosphere – but it does manage to retain its own distinct personality. It's smaller, dare I say it cooler and you're likely to be in and out much quicker. If you're in the area and need a little pick-me-up, pop in for a sherry and a few dishes but trust me when I say, you'll eat many more than just a few. I will definitely go back for a brunch with my girls
