The Gunpowder Plot is an immersive experience that takes you into a world where informants and spies lurk in every corner. At the UNESCO World Heritage Tower of London's Tower Vaults, the brand-new theatre show takes place in a specially created immersive theater area, and produced by Layered Reality in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces.
The audience is transported to the year 1605, where "Protestants and Catholics are teetering at the verge of deadly religious conflict," with the help of 20 performers, magnificent projections, lighting, and sound. The story has one torn between siding with the obviously mistreated Catholics and the radical terrorist organization led by Guy Fawkes and infiltrating the group with the intention of turning them in to the authorities in order to stop them from killing hundreds of people.
In essence, the Tower of London's opulent new immersive theater experience is a 100-minute theme park ride. The vaults are beneath the infamous Tower Hill site, where much of the events leading up to the Gunpowder Plot took place before Guy Fawkes was tortured and ultimately executed. The Gunpowder Plot experience is like a brilliant movie version of The Gunpowder Plot that comes to life around you and explodes in your face with bits of Jacobean London flying.
Knowing that Tom Felton, best known for his role as Draco Malfo, portrays Guy Fawkes in this immersive production, which was written by Danny Robins and directed by Hannah Price, may send Harry Potter fans into a frenzy. Despite the fact that the play is based in part on his famous appearance, he is a member of the digital cast and can be seen through the VR headsets.
It's a lot of fun, with three virtual reality segments intercut with believable live performers and sleek, amazing sets. It is obviously absurd but exhilarating, with stunning 360-degree views of London 400 years ago. As you risk your life to escape the Tower, find a hidden safehouse, and bravely cross the Thames to the Houses of Parliament, your five senses will be heightened. Using a combination of live theater and cutting-edge digital technology, you'll be able to go back in time and witness the events for yourself?
All in all, it was an experience like I'd never had before. It's perhaps not for those unfamiliar with the events of this well-known period of English history; however, at the end, we are given the complete scoop in dazzling visuals. It was really good and fun, but the virtual reality element, which was not yet perfected, took a bit away from it. The VR experience was quite glitchy with images on the screen chopping around. However, the novelty of whole experience undoubtedly left a good impression and I would love to go back when everything works as it should.
