"Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)" at the Criterion Theatre is a charming musical that captures the essence of New York City through the eyes of an eternally optimistic newcomer. The story follows Dougal, a naively enthusiastic Brit, who arrives in New York for his estranged father's wedding. He is picked up from the airport by Robin, the bride's sister, a pragmatic New Yorker with little patience for tourist attractions. Their initial meeting lacks romantic spark, but as they explore the city together, an undeniable chemistry develops.

Sam Tutty brings Dougal to life with infectious energy, embodying the character's quirky optimism and endearing humour. Dujonna Gift delivers a nuanced performance as Robin, skillfully balancing her character's tough exterior with a vulnerable core. The comedic interplay between Tutty and Gift keeps the audience engaged throughout the show, as Dougal attempts to win over both Robin and New York City simultaneously.

The musical cleverly parodies rom-com tropes while delivering a genuinely touching narrative. The script is peppered with witty dialogue and contemporary references, giving it a fresh and relevant feel. The musical numbers are a highlight, featuring catchy melodies that resonate with the audience. A standout moment is a rapid-fire patter song in the second act, performed with impressive diction by Gift. Jim Barne and Kit Buchan's upbeat compositions perfectly complement the lighthearted yet heartfelt story.

Soutra Gilmore's set design is innovative, utilising a series of flight cases that ingeniously transform into various New York City locations, from a bustling Chinatown restaurant to a picturesque ice skating rink. This creative use of space and props enhances the show's charm and magic.

The choreography effectively captures the characters' emotions and New York City's vibrant energy, particularly during a memorable, alcohol-fueled night out. The costumes, from Dougal's quirky British attire to Robin's chic New York style, add depth to the characters and their journey through the city's diverse settings.

"Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)" is an uplifting musical that leaves audiences smiling. It offers a delightful evening of laughter, romance, and theatrical enjoyment, proving to be as sweet and satisfying as the cake at the centre of its story.
